His Name Is Jesus

Joseph was lying awake with a broken heart. Then an angel showed up, and before he explained anything, he gave Joseph a name. That name had been promised since the garden. The Word who made everything was wrapped in it. All the fulness of God lives in it. And the One who wears it came to save you from your sins, not just in them. This week we sit with that Name. How To Use These Seven Days

How To Use These Seven Days

Ten or fifteen minutes a morning. That's all this asks.

Read it out loud

Every day opens with Scripture printed in full. Read it aloud before anything else on the page. The Word does the work, and the rest is commentary.

One day at a time

Don’t read ahead. The days build from a garden to a manger to your own heart. Day Seven is short on purpose: read it Sunday morning while you get ready for church.

Digging deeper is optional

The boxed section carries the Hebrew and Greek. Skip it on a rushed morning and come back to it on a slow one.

Write it down

There are lines on every second page for a reason. You’ll want to read this back a year from now.

Day 1: The Promise in the Garden · GENESIS 3:8–9 KJV

Day ONE

Monday, Nov 2

The Promise in the Garden

God made a promise on the worst day in history.

Read

8And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. 9And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

GENESIS 3:8–9 KJV

And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

GENESIS 3:15 KJV

Reflect

Adam and Eve had just blown it. They’re hiding in the trees, covered in fig leaves, scared of the voice they used to love hearing. And what does God do? He comes looking. “Where art thou?” God knew exactly where Adam was. The question was for Adam. Do you see where you are now? Then, right in the middle of handing out the curses, God slips in a promise. A Seed is coming. Her seed. And He’s going to crush the serpent’s head. That’s the first time the gospel shows up in the Bible, and it shows up on the worst day in human history. So if you’re having a bad week, or a bad year, don’t assume God has stopped talking to you. Some of His best promises come right in the middle of the mess. He’s still the God who comes looking.

Digging Deeper

Seed — zeraʿ (H2233). It can mean a whole line of descendants or one single child. Here it narrows down to one: “it shall bruise thy head.” Her seed. Bible family lines run through fathers. This one is traced through a woman, an early hint of the virgin birth. Paul makes the same point in Galatians 3:16: “not… seeds, as of many; but as of one… which is Christ.”

Search Your Heart

  1. 1.Where have you been hiding from God lately, the way Adam hid in the trees?
  2. 2.What would it mean for you that God comes looking instead of waiting for you to get it together?

Take It With You

Tonight, before bed, say it out loud: “Lord, here I am.” Answer the question He asked Adam.

Pray

Lord, thank You for coming to look for me when I was the one hiding. Thank You that Your promise showed up on my worst day. I’m not running anymore. Here I am. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Day TWO

From Everlasting, Born in Bethlehem

The promise took a long time. It didn’t die.

Read

But thou, Beth-lehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

MICAH 5:2 KJV

4But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

GALATIANS 4:4–5 KJV

Reflect

When Eve’s first son was born, she said, “I have gotten a man from the LORD.” She thought maybe this was the one. It wasn’t. Generations came and went, and the promise just... waited. Then the prophets started filling in the details. A virgin would have a son. And Micah even named the town: Bethlehem, a place too small to matter. But look at what Micah says about the baby: “whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.” That’s a baby with no beginning, born in a little town. And then Paul says, “when the fulness of the time was come.” Not early and not late. Right on time. Maybe you’ve been waiting on a promise for a long time, and you thought it would happen years ago. Waiting isn’t the same as forgetting. The God who kept Bethlehem on schedule hasn’t lost track of you.

Digging Deeper

“From everlasting” (Micah 5:2). The ruler born in Bethlehem existed before Bethlehem did. Only God fits that description. “Made of a woman” (Galatians 4:4). There’s Genesis 3:15 again, kept to the letter. “The fulness of the time.” God’s timing isn’t slow. It’s exact.

Search Your Heart

  1. 1.What promise from God have you been waiting on the longest?
  2. 2.Have you started treating God’s delay like a no?

Take It With You

Write down the promise you’re waiting on. Put today’s date next to it, and add “God hasn’t forgotten.”

Pray

Father, You kept Your word about Bethlehem even when it took thousands of years. Help me trust Your timing with the things I’m waiting on. I believe You haven’t forgotten me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Day THREE

Wednesday, Nov 4

The Word Was Made Flesh

The baby in the manger made the manger.

Read

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2The same was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

JOHN 1:1–3 KJV

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

JOHN 1:14 KJV

Reflect

John doesn’t start his Gospel in Bethlehem. He goes further back: “In the beginning.” Before the garden, before the stars, there was the Word. And John won’t let you turn the Word into somebody else. “The Word was God.” Think of your own words. Before you say them, they’re with you: your thought, your mind. They aren’t another person. They’re you. Then verse 14: “the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.” God didn’t send a stand-in. The Word became flesh. That means the baby lying in the hay made the hay. The One who needed Mary to feed Him made every grain of wheat on earth. And it means God isn’t far off. He knows what hungry feels like, and tired, and grief. Jesus wept at His friend’s grave. Whatever you’re carrying today, you’re not bringing it to a God who doesn’t understand.

Digging Deeper

Word — logos (G3056). The thought behind a word, the mind expressed (Thayer’s). Not the same as rhēma (G4487), which is the particular word spoken (Vine’s). Logos is the whole mind of God. John says the Logos was God. Dwelt — skēnoō (G4637). Pitched His tent. The God who filled Moses’ tabernacle moved into a tent of flesh.

Search Your Heart

  1. 1.Do you picture God as close or far away? Why?
  2. 2.What’s one thing you’ve been carrying that you haven’t told Him about?

Take It With You

Read John 11:32–36 today, the story of Lazarus’ tomb. Notice how close Jesus gets to people’s pain.

Pray

Lord Jesus, You were the Word, and You became flesh for me. Thank You for getting close enough to understand. I’m bringing You what I’ve been carrying. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Day FOUR

Thursday, Nov 5

"How Shall This Be?"

One Spirit. One God. One Son born of a woman.

Read

34Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

LUKE 1:34–35 KJV

20But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

MATTHEW 1:20–21 KJV

Reflect

Mary asked the honest question. “How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?” It wasn’t doubt, it was biology. And the angel gave her an answer: the Holy Ghost will come upon you. Now put Luke next to Matthew. Gabriel tells Mary the Holy Ghost will overshadow her. The angel tells Joseph that what’s conceived in her “is of the Holy Ghost.” So who’s the Father of the Son? The Holy Ghost. And yet Jesus calls God His Father. That’s not two fathers. The Holy Ghost is the Spirit of the Father. One Spirit, one God. Hebrews 1:5 says, “This day have I begotten thee.” The Word is eternal, but the Son was begotten in Mary’s womb, at a point in time. God put on humanity. Mary didn’t understand everything that day. She just said, “be it unto me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38). Sometimes faith is saying yes before you can explain it.

Digging Deeper

Born / begotten — gennaō (G1080). To beget or to bear. Luke 1:35: “that holy thing which shall be born of thee.” Only begotten — monogenēs (G3439) is a related but different word. It means one of a kind, unique. Don’t merge the two. Search for Truth: “His flesh, or human nature, was the Son of God, but the Spirit that dwelled within Him was the almighty God.”

Search Your Heart

  1. 1.What is God asking you to say yes to before you understand it all?
  2. 2.How does it change things to know there’s one God, not three to keep track of?

Take It With You

Pray Mary’s prayer three times today, morning, noon, and night: “Be it unto me according to thy word.”

Pray

Lord, I don’t understand everything You’re doing, but I trust You. Be it unto me according to Your word. Thank You for wrapping Yourself in flesh to reach me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Day FIVE

Friday, Nov 6

All of God, in Jesus

Jesus isn’t part of God. All of God lives in Jesus.

Read

9For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

COLOSSIANS 2:9–10 KJV

I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.

ISAIAH 43:11 KJV

And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

MATTHEW 1:21 KJV

Reflect

The church at Colossae was being told that Jesus was a good start, but they needed more: angels, rituals, some secret knowledge. Paul shut that down in one sentence. “In him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.” All of it, not a third. Bodily, not in a vision. And then: “ye are complete in him.” You don’t have to look past Jesus to find more of God. There isn’t any more. Now look at Isaiah 43:11. God says, “beside me there is no saviour.” Then Matthew says Jesus “shall save his people.” That isn’t a contradiction. The LORD came Himself, and His name is Jesus. The name even means “Jehovah is salvation.” So stop shopping. You don’t need one more voice, one more experience, or one more thing on top of Jesus. Everything God is, you find in Him.

Digging Deeper

Godhead — theotēs (G2320). Deity itself, God’s very being. It’s used only in Colossians 2:9. Not theiotēs (G2305), which is divine quality, what creation shows about God (Romans 1:20). Paul chose the stronger word. Jesus — Iēsous (G2424), from the Hebrew Yehoshua (H3091): “Jehovah is salvation” (Thayer’s).

Search Your Heart

  1. 1.Where have you been looking for “more” that you should be looking for in Jesus?
  2. 2.Does knowing Jesus’ name means “Jehovah is salvation” change how you pray it?

Take It With You

Every time you pray today, end with “in the name of Jesus” slowly and on purpose. Think about what that name means as you say it.

Pray

Jesus, You’re not a piece of God. You’re the fulness. Forgive me for looking for more somewhere else. I’m complete in You. Save me, keep me, and let Your name mean everything to me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Day SIX

Saturday, Nov 7

Into Your Heart

First He came to us. Then He comes into us.

Read

4But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. 6And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

GALATIANS 4:4–6 KJV

38Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

ACTS 2:38–39 KJV

Reflect

Read Galatians 4 again and watch the two “sent forths.” Verse 4: God sent forth His Son, made of a woman. Verse 6: God sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts. The first sending was Bethlehem. The second was Pentecost. First God came to us in flesh. Then He comes into us by His Spirit. Emmanuel, “God with us,” becomes God in us. That’s why the Holy Ghost isn’t optional. Jesus said you have to be born of water and of the Spirit (John 3:5). Paul said, “if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his” (Romans 8:9). And Peter told the crowd exactly how: repent, be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you’ll receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. “The promise is unto you.” The same Jesus who came to save you is ready to live in you. Don’t stop at the manger.

Digging Deeper

Acts 2:4 — in Jerusalem, “they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues.” Acts 10:46 — at Caesarea, Peter’s team knew the Gentiles had received it, “for they heard them speak with tongues.” Acts 19:6 — at Ephesus, years later, “they spake with tongues, and prophesied.” Three places, one sign.

Search Your Heart

  1. 1.Have you repented, been baptized in Jesus’ name, and received the Holy Ghost? If something’s missing, what’s holding you back?
  2. 2.If you have received Him, when’s the last time you thanked God for living in you?

Take It With You

If you haven’t received the Holy Ghost or been baptized in Jesus’ name, tell Pastor this Sunday. If you have, write down when it happened and tell one person this week.

Pray

Lord, I don’t want to know about You from a distance. You came to me. Now come into me. Fill me with Your Spirit, the Spirit of Your Son, and let me cry “Abba, Father” like I belong to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Day SEVEN

Sunday, Nov 8

As You Get Ready for Church

A short one for Sunday morning. Read it before you walk out the door.

Read

I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.

PSALM 122:1 KJV

Reflect

That’s your week. Now you’re walking into the house of God, where that Name is preached, prayed, and sung. Don’t go in just to sit through a service. Go in expecting the same Jesus who kept His promise to keep it again, maybe for you, maybe for the person sitting next to you.

Take It With You

On the way, pray one sentence: “Jesus, meet me today.” Then look for one person to greet by name.

Pray

Jesus, I’m glad to go into Your house today. Meet me there. Fill me, change me, and let Your name be lifted up. In Jesus’ name, amen.
